Hellships Memorial in Subic Bay
Apr 23rd, 2006, 1:19am

A Hellships Memorial was dedicated in Subic Bay on 22 Jan 2006.
The following two URLs offer information on how the Memorial came about and give pictures of the dedication.

This link was dead but is now working again as of 26 Feb.2011.

The Helships Project Website:

http://www.hellshipsmemorial.com/

I took the pictures and they can be used for any good purpose. My name is Karl-Wilhelm Welteke; I'm a retired Navy man living much of my time in Olongapo City.

Living in the RP and being a Military man I am very much interested in the Philippine History and our Phil-Am Relationship, past and present.

In the last 3 years I have visited Corregidor 10 times, many times with members of the Corregidor Heritage Society and the Coastal Defence Study Group (CDSG), and I have learned of the great contribution of the Philippine Scouts in the Defence of Corregidor and else where.
Visiting your website I get the impression that very few of your members are living in the RP. It seems since I live there I can add some things from the point of view being there.

Hello,

I found your post while surfing the Internet. My maiden name is Welteke. I live in Germany. To my knowledge all Weltekes are one family, original from Germany, near my home. If you are interested in  more information please eMail to:  juna  at   freenet.de

(Sorry that this is no post related to your topic.)

Two Hellships events occurred in 2008, here are the URLs:

On 6th April 2008 a new plaque was installed to honor the Ex Commanding Officer of USS Napa AT-32 who lost his life on a Hellship. His son and grandson were present.

Survivors of the Death March and the Hellships visited on 10th April 2008 and at the same time the local VFW Post 11447 was honored for their help in bringing this Memorial about.
