Hello, I've recently been doing a lot of research on my grandpa, Charles Ball who was with the 31st Infantry, Philippine Division in Bataan. Grandpa Charlie died over there at the San Vincente River on April 6th. Your Grandpa Buddy and my Grandpa Thomas Ball were friends back home, as my grandpa Tom served under General Patton in North Africa. The 31st Infantry was attached to the Philippine Scouts. I've recently come across some literature mentioning a Mike Campbell and I'll see if I can find those citations and get back to you.

I had made a mistake on the date of the roster. It was a photocopy I came across and where it was cut off on the upper right side looks like a 2 to me, which would make the date April 30, 1942. This document answered many questions for me in my research. Now, if I could find information about Major Joe C East, whom 1LT Roger W Swain was XO for.......
Dave Duhan

Re: General Wainwrights Book

Just recently in June 2010 I received a copy of the book titled General Wainwright’s Story pulled from distant family storage, and finished reading it for the first time. I found it to be a well written, comprehensive, detailed, and extremely saddening account of the hardships of the General’s command, and his capture while stationed in the Philippines defending the country.

This copy was signed by General Wainwright, and has some notes on the first page from my great aunt, Gladys Ketchum, written to her sister (my grandmother) when given to her as a gift upon Gladys’s return after her internment at Santo Thomas/Los Banos.

Gladys’s notes are signed and dated 1946, so this has been with our family since that time. Both Gladys and Hubert are mentioned in the General’s book, so it is even more of an historical account and very interesting reading for us.

Once again I would like to thank the Philippine Scouts Historical Society, and everyone that brought forward additional information and accounts of the Ketchums during the Philippine Island campaign.

The additional detailed information presented, and accounts from members actually there with them during this time so long ago is no less than amazing, and would not have been possible without the Historical Society and efforts of its members – thank you very much!

Best Regards,
Scott Fisher
Dear PSHS members,
I am trying to determine my father's eligibility for military awards for his service with the PS during WW2 and hope anyone can help. By way of background, my father retired from the US Army in 1966 after 24 years of honorable service; as for myself, I am a USAF veteran.

Specifically, I am looking for any information regarding unit authorizations for the Combat Infantryman's Badge awarded to members of the PS, possibly specifically to the 57 INF. One of the reasons for this request is to determine Dad's eligibility for the Bronze Star Medal; as an infantryman who was awarded the PH and <possibly> the CIB he would be eligible for the BSM per AR 800-6-22.

Recently Dad and I requested copies of his service record from NPRC, and while my father served with the PS but there are scant references to PS combat service in his record. There are passing references in his WD AGO Form 20, WD AGO Form 21 and DD Form 4 regarding guerrilla service as an infantryman with the PS from April 1942 to Feb 1946, although no specific PS unit is indicated. Dad is insistent that he is eligible for the CIB as he saw repeated combat engagements and was wounded in action while assigned to the PS.

Later service (in Aug 1946) shows assignment to D Co, 57 IN RGT, and (in Oct 1946) to HQ/HQ Co, 57 IN RGT.

He was wounded in July 1945 but was not formally awarded the PH for those wounds until March 1966, as indicated by his retirement DD214. There are multiple references to the combat injuries in his medical records. However, there is no record of any awarding of the CIB in his NPRC paperwork.

I realize this is fragmented information due to the nature of records that are 50+ years old, but any/all information folks might be able to provide is very much appreciated. My father is now 86 years old and unable to provide much in terms of personal recollection of that period.

Many thanks in advance --
MML
Maryland, USA

Henry A. Kwan was a family friend of ours and I'm sorry to say he passed away on July 12, 2010 just a few days after his 92nd birthday on July 8th which was also his wedding anniversary. His wife and some family are still living in the DC/MD/VA area. The viewing was on Sunday July 18th. Because of the backlog at Arlington, he will not be buried until Oct.26th at Arlington Cemetery. There will be a funeral mass at St. Jude's Church in Rockville, Md at 12:00PM followed by interment with a full military ceremony at Arlington at 3:00PM. Some details are available on the funeral home's website. Just do a search on their website for Henry Kwan, or click on view all services. You may want to call the funeral home, Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home on (301) 622-2290 as I don't know if the family put a notice in the newspaper (I live in PA) , but perhaps they can provide additional information. The family had contacted my family so that some of us were able to attend the viewing in time. Henry had joined the US Army and raised a family in Maryland. He passed away at the National Naval Medical Center.

-- Anita Ghebeles
Angus Lorezen is the Commander of the BACEPOW group.

I found Gladys Esperanza Ketchum listed as an internee at Los Banos, probably transferred there in 1943 or 1944. There were no other Ketchums listed. There was a family of three Fishers listed in Los Banos also, who may or may not have been related to Gladys.

We have nobody named Fisher in the BACEPOW membership. If Scott Fisher posted an inquiry about Gladys, why can't Barbara Keck respond to that posting?

Sasha - with your encyclopedic knowledge of people in the camps, do you know of anyone named Fisher who might be related to Galdys?

Cheers, Angus
