A few years ago I went looking for information on my Cousin, Arthur H. "Bud" Kelder, 2nd General Hospital, who died in Cabanatuan Camp I on November 19, 1942. In doing so, I've come across a lot information and documents which I'd like to share with other POW/MIA family members.

The US Government did a fairly good job of recovering remains after the war, but a not so good job of identifying the remains recovered from Cabanatuan as well as those from the defense of Bataan, Corregidor and The Death March. For example, in one case we've found, two men were buried in the same grave at Cabanatuan and their identities were recorded in the burial record. One was identified, but no dental records were available for the other man so he remains an unknown seventy years later - his family was told simply that there were no remains to return. In another case the identity of the remains were obvious, but dental records were not found because they used an incorrect spelling of the last name (which wouldn't have been difficult to find if anyone had looked). These are the exceptions, but illustrate that more research is warranted on all these cases.

While there are presently no plans to disinter these unknowns for identification, the Army Casualty Office is stepping up their efforts to obtain a Family Reference Sample (DNA) from the family of each WWII MIA and ask that someone from each family contact them. Their phone is 800-892-2490 and other contact information is available at their website. (Google Past Conflicts Repatriation Branch)

It is very important for all families to participate because each identification depends not just on a single DNA sample, but also those of others who may have been involved in the same incident or grave.

An additional reason to contact the Army Casualty Office is to request a copy of the Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF) for your family member. This file often contains information not previously released.

We have found that in those pre-copy machine days it was common that many documents did not find their way in to every concerned file so it is best to request the files for everyone who was buried in the same grave at Cabanatuan. If you will email me at bataanmissing at gmail.com and tell me who your family member is and your relationship I'll send you a list of related files to ask for. (I usually cc: this information to the Army Casualty Office, but you still have to call them and ask for it.) In some cases, I may be able to provide files detailing efforts to identify the remains from that communal grave.

We have currently accounted for 2,724 men who were buried in the Cabanatuan I & III Cemeteries, of whom 950 were not identified and are now buried in the Manila American Cemetery as unknowns (where there are a total of 3,744 unknowns). An excerpt of this burial list is available at BataanMissing.com . We continue to collect information on other unknowns from the Defense of Bataan and Corregidor, the Bataan Death March and POW Camps in the Philippines so just ask if you don't find what you need.

The members of my family have found great comfort in knowing where our family member is buried and that his grave is well maintained. I'll be happy to share similar information with other families if I can.

John Eakin

I was hoping to see some of the faces and do research, but these photos are too small to do that, and very low resolution. Is there any chance that they can be scanned with higher resolution to make a larger picture?

thanks!

On page 51 of the December 2007 issue of The American Legion Magazine there is a short article entitled "Former POWs Sought." Former prisoners of war not currently using VA benefits and services are urged to contact the VA to find out if they are eligible for health care, disability compensation and services. More than 25,000 former POWs are alive today, many of whom have not been in touch with the VA and may be unfamiliar with a number of new benefits, including help for surviving spouses and family members.

The government's effort to inform former POWs about improvements in benefits faces a particular hurdle with older veterans who may not have been touch with the VA for decades.

Former POWs should contact the VA at (800) 827-1000. Details about benefits and services available are also online at www.vba.va.gov/bln/21/benefits/pow/index.htm.

Editor

Maps for the Scout museum.
These are greatly enlarged, photo quality, printed on rolled white paper. Their detail is very good and they are excellent for research purposes.

These oversize maps can be covered in a medium weight plastic from a fabric store (make sure they roll it onto a bolt for you) and the plastic can be written on with dry-erase board pens, and cleaned off.

These are the maps I had at the reunion, which Col Olson requested for the museum. They are:

1. Central Luzon 1899-1903. Has excellent detail of terrain, villages, roads, train, telegraph, etc

2. Greater Manila November 1944; 3 maps, 3 sizes, the third map is Nova Liches resevoir north - Ft McK. south - route 53 east - water west.

3. YMCA serviceman's Manila map, 1940, 2 maps, 2 sizes

4. Guerrilla organizations and radio communication October 1944, Baguio-Batangas area. This is my Philipine Scouts liberation radio network map that is hand colored for my research.

5. the landing beaches at Lingayen where the guerrillas met the Army in January 1945.

3/2008
LAST CALL FOR MAP REQUESTS
Are there any more requests for other maps for the museum? I might have them, or I may know people who will trade maps. My goal it to get the tube mailed within the week, if there are no more requests.

RE requests for a CORREGIDOR map with tunnels.

I am adding a partial map that is a pre-war government map of Corregidor. It is 3'x4' and shows the center of the island (N-S). The tunnels are mapped, the elevations are marked, features are shown inside and on the surface.

This Corregidor map is available via email.

It can be printed in photo quality at 8x10 inches. That is too small for details to be seen; however, that photo can be taken to a shop like Kinko's and reproduced at 3x4 feet, in photo quality, for about $10.

US Public libraries often have subscriptions to Ancestry.com. Library patrons can make appointments to use the library computers (free), and use the library system's subscription to Ancestry.com (free) to do their research and make print-outs (usually free) to take home.
Ancestry.com has the largest number of databases available on line and their military collection is impressive.
